Fort McMurray… Three homes across Fort McMurray were searched as part of an ALERT investigation into a well-known drug dealer. ALERT seized more than $100,000 worth of drugs, along with a firearm.
ALERT Fort McMurray’s organized crime team investigation targeted suspected drug dealer Jeffrey Caines. The 51-year-old has been the subject of previous ALERT investigations and has convictions for similar drug-related offences.
Previously, Caines was convicted of conspiracy to commit an indicatable offence as part of Project Koker in 2011, and convicted of drug and firearms offences in 2020.
On August 14, 2024 Caines, along with an associate, was arrested at an Eagle Ridge condo and caught with $100,000 worth of drugs. Three simultaneous search warrants were executed with the help of Wood Buffalo RCMP and the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team.
“This individual is arguably one of the most well-known organized crime figures in the region. His alleged proclivity for drugs continues to put the community in harm’s way and I’m glad our team was able to take a significant amount of harmful substances off the streets,” said Staff Sergeant Mark Wait, ALERT Fort McMurray.
ALERT’s investigation resulted in the seizure of 1,051 grams of cocaine, $18,790 cash, and a firearm. The drugs were packaged in a manner consistent with street-level distribution.
Caines and Crystal MacLellan, 39 years old, are jointly charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime.
Caines remains in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 20, 2024.
Several other suspects were identified and more arrests and charges are being contemplated. ALERT’s investigation remains ongoing.
