Stolen Car Investigation Leads to Major Fentanyl Seizure

Calgary… What began as investigation into a stolen car, turned into one of ALERT’s largest fentanyl seizures. A joint investigation between ALERT Calgary and Calgary Police Service led to the recovery of a stolen BMW and a seizure of 1,831 fentanyl pills.

ALERT Calgary’s organized crime and gang team opened an investigation in early January to assist CPS in exploring the connection between stolen vehicles and drug offences. ALERT had information to suggest a Calgary man was using a stolen vehicle to facilitate a suspected fentanyl trafficking operation.

The investigation concluded on January 11, 2017 with search warrants carried out at homes in Calgary’s Riverbend and Mountview neighbourhoods. The searches yielded upwards of $75,000 worth of drugs, including fentanyl, cocaine, and heroin, over $100,000 in cash proceeds of crime, and a stolen 2016 BMW.

The seized items included:

  • Stolen 2016 BMW coupe;
  • 1,831 fentanyl pills;
  • 130 grams of cocaine;
  • 44 grams of crack cocaine;
  • 48 grams of heroin;
  • 2 grams of methamphetamine;
  • 24 grams of marijuana;
  • 13 grams of codeine;
  • 321 grams of an unknown powder;
  • $104,342 in cash proceeds of crime;

The BMW, valued at $60,000, was previously reported stolen from a Calgary home in July 2016.

Leslie Ma, 25-year-old man, and Anny Vo, 24-year-old woman, have been charged with a total of 22 criminal offences. The charges against the two Calgary residents relate to drug trafficking, possession of stolen property, and possession of proceeds of crime.
