Calgary… A Quebec man has been charged with numerous offences relating to human trafficking. The suspect allegedly forced two young women into the sex trade through violence.
ALERT’s Human Trafficking unit arrested Xavier Godbout on October 24, 2024 with help from the Calgary Police Service. The 22-year-old man was also wanted on warrants stemming from Quebec.
Godbout had allegedly met the two women via social media. He recruited them to travel to Calgary under the pretense of a job. Upon arrival, Godbout allegedly attempted to force them into working in the sex trade.
When one of the victims resisted, she was violently assaulted, being punched several times and had a gun held to her head.
“Victim safety was our utmost concern. Upon receiving information from our colleagues in Quebec, our unit sprang into action in order to get these two women to a safe place and make an arrest,” said Staff Sergeant Gordon MacDonald, ALERT.
The two survivors managed to contact police and were provided support resources through ALERT’s Safety Network Coordinator. Survivors of human trafficking can call 211 for help.
Godbout remains in police custody and has been charged with:
Godbout has a firearms prohibition. He was also wanted on two warrants relation to assault with a weapon, which took place in April 2022, and failure to comply with a probation order, which took place in October 2022.
ALERT’s Human Trafficking unit believes there may be additional victims and are encouraging them to come forward and speak with police. Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact local police or Crime Stoppers (1-800-222-TIPS).
