Edmonton… A 34-year-old Edmonton man was arrested as part of a human trafficking investigation by ALERT.
ALERT’s Human Trafficking and Counter Exploitation unit charged Edwin Luberisse in Calgary on June 20, 2020. The suspect has been charged with trafficking in persons, human trafficking for a material benefit, and procuring sexual activity.
Luberisse was initially arrested by Calgary Police Service on an unrelated firearms offence.
The victim allegedly made numerous attempts over the years to break free from Luberisse’s control, however, he allegedly used threats, coercion, and intimidation to sexually exploit the victim for his personal material benefit.
“Our primary concern, first and foremost, was the health and well-being of the victim. Our unit will now seek to identify and assist other potential victims who may have been under the accused’s control,” said Staff Sgt. Lance Parker, ALERT Human Trafficking unit.
Luberisse remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on July 22, 2020.
ALERT is exploring additional charges and is asking for possible victims to come forward. Anyone with information about this investigation, or any human trafficking offence is encouraged to contact local police or Crime Stoppers.
