Family Doctor Allegedly Attempted to Arrange for Sex with a Child
Posted: June 29, 2018
Edmonton… A family physician from Sylvan Lake has been charged with child exploitation offences following a joint investigation involving ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit and the Victoria Police Department.
Dr. Fred Janke was arrested in Edmonton on June 28, 2018, with the help of the Edmonton Police Service. The 62-year-old man is facing charges of making arrangements to commit sexual offences against a child, making child pornography, and distribution of child pornography.
While the investigation and charges are related strictly to online offences, ICE is encouraging anyone with information about this case to come forward and contact police or cybertip.ca.
Dating back to October 2017, Janke had allegedly been engaged in sexually explicit conversations with a person he met online. The sexual conversations allegedly progressed to Janke attempting to arrange for sex with the person’s 5-year-old daughter. However, the daughter did not exist and Janke had actually been speaking with a Victoria Police Department undercover operator.
The Victoria Police Department’s ICE unit had been conducting a proactive, online investigation involving a website that is known to host online chat rooms geared towards child sex. Once the Victoria Police Department ICE investigators determined the suspect was based in Alberta, the information was referred to ALERT’s ICE Unit.
Janke has been a practicing physician in Sylvan Lake for nearly 30 years.
ALERT was established and is funded by the Alberta Government and is a compilation of the province’s most sophisticated law enforcement resources committed to tackling serious and organized crime. Members of Calgary Police Service, Edmonton Police Service, Lethbridge Police Service, Medicine Hat Police Service, and RCMP work in ALERT.
