Cross-Border Investigation Leads to Arrest of Military member

Edmonton… A Canadian Armed Forces member has been charged with child luring and child pornography related offences following a joint investigation by ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation unit and the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations.

Steven Massey, 32, has been charged with luring, making child pornography, and distribution of child pornography. Massey is a member of the Canadian Armed Forces and is based in Wainwright, Alta.

Massey was arrested on June 21, 2017 in Edmonton. Meanwhile his military residence was searched and a number of computers and electronic devices were seized. Military Police and Alberta Sheriffs provided assistance with the investigation.

The investigation relates to child luring allegations against Massey that were first discovered by U.S. Homeland Security Investigations based in Laredo, Texas in March 2017. ICE alleges that Massey had attempted to arrange to meet up with a Texas girl for sex.

“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) are committed to seeking out and bringing to justice those who prey upon children, and this successful investigation is a good example of that outstanding international collaboration and partnership,” said HSI Ottawa Attaché Melissa Ruiz.

Massey was released from custody on a number of court-imposed conditions. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 30.
