Calgary… Two units in a Calgary fourplex have been ordered closed until April 19 after the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) Unit was successful in obtaining a Community Safety Order (CSO).
The investigation began in March 2012 after SCAN received public complaints about drug-related activity at two units 7703 41 Avenue Northwest. After informal efforts were unsuccessful, SCAN applied for and obtained a CSO.
During the closure period, the owner must vacate the units and the property will be secured, including the installation of a fence around the perimeter. All tenancy agreements or leases are terminated as of the closure date.
“The outcome of this investigation is a reminder to owners that they are accountable for the activity occurring at their property,” said SCAN Manager Billy Kerr. “We will continue to work with residents to ensure the safety of their neighbourhoods, while also encouraging owners and landlords to take responsibility for their property.”
Throughout the investigation, SCAN members worked closely with the Calgary Police Service. This property has presented an ongoing problem for police. This is the second CSO imposed on this owner within one year but on separate properties.
While the police deal with criminal complaints against people, SCAN investigators use civil legislation to target problem properties used for illegal purposes, such as prostitution, drug use and drug trafficking, and gang activity.
