Asset 1ALERT-Wide-White
TEAM LEAD SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS
Closes 06/11/2026

Location: Strathcona County, Alberta
Position Type: Full-Time | Continuous
Salary: $96,470 – $106,475 annually

Build solutions. Lead innovation. Make an impact.

At ALERT, technology plays a critical role in supporting the work of law enforcement teams across Alberta. From custom-built applications to integrated software platforms, the solutions we develop and implement help our people work more effectively, securely, and efficiently.

We’re looking for a Team Lead, Software Solutions who brings strong technical expertise, creative problem-solving, and a collaborative leadership approach.

This is an opportunity for an experienced software professional who enjoys being hands-on with technology while guiding development priorities, mentoring others, and helping shape how software supports a unique and evolving organization.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

Reporting to the Manager, Innovation and Technology, you’ll lead ALERT’s software solutions function, balancing hands-on development with technical leadership, project delivery, and strategic decision-making.

You’ll oversee the development and ongoing improvement of internally built applications, assess third-party solutions, and collaborate with stakeholders to identify opportunities where technology can make a meaningful difference.

You’ll also provide day-to-day leadership and mentorship to a Full Stack Developer, helping build a collaborative, accountable, and forward-thinking team.

This isn’t a role where you’ll simply manage projects from the sidelines. We’re looking for someone who enjoys solving technical challenges, contributing to development, and turning complex requirements into practical, sustainable solutions.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

Lead and develop software solutions

  • Guide the design, development, integration, deployment, and ongoing maintenance of custom software applications.
  • Contribute directly to coding, troubleshooting, code reviews, and technical problem-solving.
  • Build and maintain reliable, secure, scalable, and maintainable solutions.
  • Apply sound software development practices, including testing, documentation, version control, and continuous improvement.
  • Support integrations between internal applications, third-party platforms, and organizational systems.

Turn business needs into technology solutions

  • Work directly with stakeholders to understand challenges, assess requirements, and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Evaluate whether business needs are best addressed through internal development, existing technology, or third-party solutions.
  • Research emerging technologies and recommend practical applications that deliver measurable value.
  • Translate technical considerations into clear recommendations for non-technical stakeholders.

Lead projects and technology decisions

  • Plan, prioritize, and coordinate software initiatives from concept through implementation.
  • Establish realistic timelines, manage competing priorities, and communicate project progress.
  • Evaluate software products, vendors, licensing models, and total cost of ownership.
  • Support software procurement, vendor negotiations, contract renewals, and licensing optimization.
  • Contribute to technology planning, budgeting, and longer-term software strategies.

Support people and performance

  • Provide technical direction, coaching, and mentorship to the Software Solutions team.
  • Establish clear expectations, support professional development, and provide constructive performance feedback.
  • Foster collaboration, accountability, knowledge sharing, and continuous learning.
  • Coordinate software-related support requests and ensure issues are addressed according to business priorities.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

We’re interested in what you know, what you’ve built, and how you approach challenges, not simply the credentials or job titles on your résumé.

Technical expertise

  • Strong experience in full-stack software development, including application architecture, programming, databases, APIs, and system integration.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, develop, troubleshoot, and maintain business-critical applications.
  • Working knowledge of modern software development practices, including Agile methodologies, testing, security, and source control.
  • Experience assessing and integrating third-party applications and technology platforms.
  • Ability to evaluate technical options and make informed recommendations that balance functionality, security, cost, and long-term sustainability.

Leadership and delivery

  • Experience guiding technical work, coordinating development projects, or mentoring other developers.
  • Ability to organize competing priorities, manage project deliverables, and adapt to changing business needs.
  • Sound judgment and a practical approach to balancing innovation with reliability and organizational requirements.
  • Confidence working independently while knowing when to collaborate, escalate, or seek additional expertise.

Communication and collaboration

  • Strong analytical skills and a natural curiosity for understanding how things work — and how they could work better.
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, practical language.
  • Strong relationship-building skills and a collaborative, service-oriented approach.
  • Initiative, adaptability, and a commitment to delivering quality work.

YOUR EXPERIENCE:

You’ll ideally bring several years of progressive software development experience, including exposure to technical leadership, project coordination, or mentoring others.

A diploma or degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Software Development, or a related discipline would be an asset. We also welcome candidates who have developed equivalent expertise through hands-on experience, professional training, certifications, or alternative career paths.

Formal supervisory experience is an asset, but demonstrated technical leadership, sound judgment, and the ability to support others are equally important.

WHY JOIN ALERT?

At ALERT, your work will have purpose beyond the technology itself.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Develop and influence software solutions that support important public safety work across Alberta.
  • Take ownership of meaningful projects and see the direct impact of your contributions.
  • Work with a diverse group of technical professionals, investigators, and corporate teams.
  • Help shape technology decisions in an organization where innovation, security, and practical problem-solving matter.
  • Continue growing as both a technical professional and a people leader.

BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH ALERT:

ALERT provides meaningful work in an organization committed to making Alberta safer. As part of our corporate team, you’ll benefit from:

  • Health & Wellness
  • 100% Employer-paid extended health, dental, life, and disability coverage
  • Virtual healthcare and Employee Assistance Programs
  • Annual Paid Wellness Day
  • One hundred (100) hours Paid Sick Leave Annually
  • On-site gym access
  • Financial Support
  • Generous Annual Flexible Benefits Account (e.g., family activities, alternative health, pet care, cosmetic services)
  • Employer-matched Group RRSP contributions
  • Work-Life Balance
  • Flexible Schedule with Averaging Arrangements to allow for Earned Days Off weekly or biweekly.
  • Three (3) weeks of paid vacation to start
  • 13 paid provincial and national holidays
  • Professional Development
  • Ongoing training and educational support

APPLICATION QUESTIONS:

  1. I understand this role is in-person at the ALERT Sherwood Park Office. (Yes/No)
  1. I understand that the required RCMP enhanced security clearance requires that the successful applicant hold Canadian Citizenship or are a Canadian Permanent Resident. I am a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident. (Yes/No)
  1. I am able to commute to the Sherwood Park office and understand relocation support is not offered. (Yes/No)

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Interested candidates should forward a resume and cover letter by email to careers@alert-ab.ca and indicate “Team Lead, Software Solutions” in the subject line.

The competition closes November 6 but may remain active at the discretion of ALERT.

Only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. The successful candidate will be required to submit to and pass a RCMP enhanced security screening process.

ALERT is committed to equitable hiring and inclusive practices.

Since 2022, CISA has been guided by four pillars that focus the effort to promote an integrated, intelligence-led approach to combating organized crime; these are:

  • Building Relationships with Stakeholders;
  • Promote Intel Sharing Across the Province;
  • Being Proactive and Identify Emerging Trends; and
  • Investing in Our People Through Training and Development

Criminal Intelligence Service Alberta (CISA) has recently developed an Alberta Firearms Intelligence Centre (AFIC) to equitably expand access to firearms intelligence for all law enforcement agencies within Alberta. AFIC will provide timely, accurate, and actionable intelligence to law enforcement agencies and policy-makers to achieve the shared and collaborative goals of increasing public safety concerning firearm-related crimes.

Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) involves images and/or videos that depict the sexual abuse of minors – the majority of which involve prepubescent children. Often, CSAM involves explicit and/or extreme sexual assaults against the child victim (Cybertip.ca).

Ghost Guns are illegal, privately manufactured firearms or lower receivers. These weapons are often made with 3D-printers, and undermine public safety due to their lack of licensing requirements, serialization and safety controls.
