ALERT’s Technical Investigations Unit (TIU) is looking for an experienced Electronic Surveillance Civilian Technician to join our Edmonton team.

This is a highly specialized, hands-on role supporting investigators through the deployment, operation, maintenance, and development of covert electronic surveillance technology.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting directly to a TIU Sergeant, with oversight from the Director, Technology and Investigative Support, you will work closely with investigators to understand operational requirements and develop practical technical solutions to support complex investigations.

Your work will take you beyond a traditional technical environment.

You may be conducting reconnaissance for a covert deployment, designing and constructing a concealment for specialized equipment, troubleshooting technology in the field, researching emerging surveillance tools, or preparing to provide expert testimony in court.

The work is varied, highly confidential, and operationally focused. You will:

• Operate, service, maintain, and support covert surveillance software, hardware, 3D printers, specialized equipment, tools, and related assets.
• Conduct vehicle and area reconnaissance in preparation for covert technical deployments.
• Design, construct, modify, and install props and concealments for covert equipment.
• Research, evaluate, test, and validate emerging technology and equipment for potential operational use.
• Provide ongoing technical and operational support to ALERT investigators.
• Develop and maintain practical equipment guides and technical documentation.
• Monitor relevant and emerging electronic surveillance case law and adapt practices where required.
• Prepare technical documentation for investigative files and disclosure.
• Provide subject matter expertise and court testimony when required.
• Maintain equipment inventories, procurement records, and deployment logs.
• Assist with technical training and development for ALERT investigators.
• Support the development and maintenance of TIU forms, manuals, reports, and operational guides.
• Assist partner police agencies with electronic surveillance requirements when internal resources or equipment are unavailable.
• Complete technical training and field requirements necessary to maintain relevant professional qualifications and memberships.

Because investigations do not always happen on a predictable schedule, this position requires flexibility. Travel throughout Alberta, outdoor work in varying environmental conditions, changing shifts, overtime, covert installations, and court attendance are all part of the role.

WHO YOU ARE

You are a technically skilled, resourceful professional who enjoys solving complex problems and making technology work in real-world operational environments.

You understand that success in technical surveillance requires more than technical expertise. It requires discretion, sound judgment, adaptability, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively alongside investigators in high-pressure situations.

You bring:

• Completion of the NATIA Certified Technical Investigator (CTI) course or equivalent.
• A minimum of three years of related technical surveillance experience.
• Previous law enforcement experience.
• Completion of an Advanced Surveillance course or equivalent law enforcement surveillance training.
• The ability to obtain and maintain the required RCMP security clearance.
• A valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s Licence with a clean driving record.
• Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• The ability to manage multiple priorities and perform effectively in high-pressure environments.
• The ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively within an integrated team.
• The flexibility to adjust working hours, work overtime, and travel throughout Alberta based on operational requirements.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical information to audiences with varying levels of technical knowledge.

Experience in any of the following would be considered an asset:

• Drug and/or organized crime investigations.
• Part VI/wireroom operations.
• Undercover operations.
• Multi-jurisdictional investigations involving partner police agencies.
• Expert witness testimony.
• Search warrant drafting.
• Electronics, electrical, mechanical, fabrication, or related technical disciplines.
