ALERT lays 77 charges against Calgary man in child pornography case

February 10, 2012

Calgary… A Calgary man has been arrested and charged with 77 child pornography related offences allegedly committed against 16 victims between the ages of 11 and 16-years-old, all residents of Alberta.

ALERT’s Southern Alberta Internet Child Exploitation unit (ICE) is an integrated team made up of members from Calgary Police Service, Medicine Hat Police Service, Lethbridge Regional Police Service, and the RCMP.  The ICE unit was tipped off by multiple sources, including Cochrane RCMP, Fort McMurray RCMP, Drumheller RCMP, a social networking website, concerned parents, and a 14-year-old victim.

Each complaint was filed separately with different agencies and forwarded to the ICE unit for further investigation. There, investigators were able to piece together information that led them to one suspect who is alleged to have contacted his victims through various social networking sites.

Daniel Thomas Mackie, age 25, of Calgary, has been charged with 77 offences, including a number of counts of making, possessing, accessing and distributing child pornography, child luring, invitation to sexual touching, extortion, and impersonation.

“The victims in this case did the right thing by reporting the inappropriate online communication to their parents” said Detective Joel Rumancik of the southern ICE unit. “After receiving the information from their children, the parents took that information and filed complaints with the police.”

While 16 victims have already been identified, investigators believe there may be more. If anyone has information pertaining to this investigation they are encouraged to contact Detective Joel Rumancik of the southern Alberta ICE unit at 403-428-4911.

ICE is an ALERT team established and funded by the Government of Alberta to bring together the province’s most sophisticated law enforcement resources to tackle serious and organized crime. Over 400 municipal police, RCMP and sheriffs work for ALERT.
