ALERT bust nets over $700,000 in drugs in Fort McMurray, two people charged

Fort McMurray…ALERT’s Wood Buffalo Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) concluded a drug investigation with the seizure of almost five kilograms of cocaine and over 26 kilograms of marihuana, and charges against two Fort McMurray residents.

On July 26, CFSEU-Wood Buffalo executed search warrants on a vehicle and at a downtown apartment in Fort McMurray. Police seized 4.65 kilograms of cocaine and 26.3 kilograms of marihuana, as well as drug trafficking paraphernalia and a truck. During the vehicle search, an 18-month-old child was present, prompting police to call in Alberta Human Services.

The Wood Buffalo RCMP, including the detachment’s Drug Section, provided significant support throughout this investigation. ALERT’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Units in Calgary and Red Deer also assisted.

“Investigations into drug trafficking and organized crime are complex and take time,” explained CFSEU-Wood Buffalo Sgt. Kirk Peyton. “This bust reinforces how important collaboration between partners is to achieve results and ultimately make our communities safer.”

A 31-year-old man is charged with trafficking cocaine, possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, possession for the purpose of trafficking marihuana, and possession of cocaine.

A 23-year-old woman is charged with trafficking cocaine, possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, possession for the purpose of trafficking marihuana, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

The names of the accused are not being released to protect the child’s identity.

The accused have been released on bail and make their next court appearance on August 27 in Fort McMurray.
