Fort McMurray…ALERT’s Wood Buffalo Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) concluded a drug investigation with the seizure of almost five kilograms of cocaine and over 26 kilograms of marihuana, and charges against two Fort McMurray residents.

On July 26, CFSEU-Wood Buffalo executed search warrants on a vehicle and at a downtown apartment in Fort McMurray. Police seized 4.65 kilograms of cocaine and 26.3 kilograms of marihuana, as well as drug trafficking paraphernalia and a truck. During the vehicle search, an 18-month-old child was present, prompting police to call in Alberta Human Services.

The Wood Buffalo RCMP, including the detachment’s Drug Section, provided significant support throughout this investigation. ALERT’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Units in Calgary and Red Deer also assisted.

“Investigations into drug trafficking and organized crime are complex and take time,” explained CFSEU-Wood Buffalo Sgt. Kirk Peyton. “This bust reinforces how important collaboration between partners is to achieve results and ultimately make our communities safer.”

A 31-year-old man is charged with trafficking cocaine, possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, possession for the purpose of trafficking marihuana, and possession of cocaine.

A 23-year-old woman is charged with trafficking cocaine, possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, possession for the purpose of trafficking marihuana, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

The names of the accused are not being released to protect the child’s identity.

The accused have been released on bail and make their next court appearance on August 27 in Fort McMurray.

To report suspicious activity in your community, contact police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). CFSEU-Wood Buffalo is also reminding the public to call its gang information hotline at (780) 788-4264 (GANG) to report any information that might assist the police in its crackdown on gang and organized crime.

CFSEU-Wood Buffalo is an ALERT team made up of RCMP members jointly funded by the province and municipality to bring together Alberta’s most sophisticated law enforcement resources to tackle serious and organized crime. Nearly 400 municipal police, RCMP and sheriffs work for ALERT.

Since 2022, CISA has been guided by four pillars that focus the effort to promote an integrated, intelligence-led approach to combating organized crime; these are:

  • Building Relationships with Stakeholders;
  • Promote Intel Sharing Across the Province;
  • Being Proactive and Identify Emerging Trends; and
  • Investing in Our People Through Training and Development

Criminal Intelligence Service Alberta (CISA) has recently developed an Alberta Firearms Intelligence Centre (AFIC) to equitably expand access to firearms intelligence for all law enforcement agencies within Alberta. AFIC will provide timely, accurate, and actionable intelligence to law enforcement agencies and policy-makers to achieve the shared and collaborative goals of increasing public safety concerning firearm-related crimes.

Ghost Guns are illegal, privately manufactured firearms or lower receivers. These weapons are often made with 3D-printers, and undermine public safety due to their lack of licensing requirements, serialization and safety controls.
