Alberta ICE participates in inter-provincial operation targeting online predators

October 17, 2012

Edmonton…As part of Operation Snapshot, an inter-provincial operation targeting online predators announced this morning by the Canadian Police Centre for Missing and Exploited Children in Regina, ALERT Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) teams have conducted nine investigations and charged four people with a number of child pornography offences.

ALERT’s ICE units are integrated police teams made up of members from the RCMP, Calgary Police Service, Edmonton Police Service, Lethbridge Regional Police Service, and Medicine Hat Police Service.

Alberta ICE teams generated a total of nine investigations related to Operation Snapshot; seven investigations were conducted by the southern Alberta ICE Unit and two investigations by the northern Alberta ICE Unit. To date, ICE has laid a total of 11 charges against four men; three Calgary residents and one Edmonton resident. The other files remain under investigation.

Charges include accessing, possessing, and making available child pornography, as well as luring.

The police will not be releasing the names of the accused at this time as the cases are still under investigation and awaiting further forensic analysis.

ICE investigates the sexual exploitation of children through the Internet and works to reduce harm through public education and prevention programs.

ICE is an ALERT team established and funded by the Government of Alberta to bring together the province’s most sophisticated law enforcement resources to tackle serious and organized crime. Over 400 municipal police, RCMP and sheriffs work for ALERT.
