Guns Seized from Downtown Red Deer

Red Deer… Four guns were seized and two people were arrested in downtown Red Deer following an ALERT drug trafficking investigation.

ALERT’s Red Deer organized crime and gang team made the seizure on May 19 with the assistance of RCMP Red Deer. A home in the 4900-block of 54 Street was searched and the following items were seized:

  • SKS semi-automatic carbine with collapsible stock;
  • .308-caliber semi-automatic rifle;
  • 7mm rifle;
  • 12 gauge shotgun;
  • Various ammunition;
  • Body armour;
  • 9 grams of cocaine;
  • 98 suspected codeine pills;
  • $980 cash proceeds of crime.

The firearms were not lawfully possessed and are being subject to forensic analysis to determine if they were potentially used in any previous crimes. ALERT will continue to work with the RCMP’s National Weapons Enforcement Support Team to gain more information about their origins.

“This was a short-term investigation that will have a sizeable public safety impact. An arsenal such as this does not belong in the hands of drug dealers,” said Insp. Chad Coles of ALERT.

Landon Dorval, 22, and Brittany Aebly, 26, have been jointly charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking (x 2), careless storage of a firearm (x 4), unauthorized possession of a firearm (x 4), possession of a firearm for a dangerous purpose (x 4). Both were release from custody and are expected to appear in court on July 7.

Members of the public who suspect drug or gang activity in their community can call local police, or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers is always anonymous.

ALERT was established and is funded by the Alberta Government and is a compilation of the province’s most sophisticated law enforcement resources committed to tackling serious and organized crime. Members of Alberta Sheriffs, Calgary Police Service, Edmonton Police Service, Lethbridge Police Service, Medicine Hat Police Service, and RCMP work in ALERT.

Since 2022, CISA has been guided by four pillars that focus the effort to promote an integrated, intelligence-led approach to combating organized crime; these are:

  • Building Relationships with Stakeholders;
  • Promote Intel Sharing Across the Province;
  • Being Proactive and Identify Emerging Trends; and
  • Investing in Our People Through Training and Development

Criminal Intelligence Service Alberta (CISA) has recently developed an Alberta Firearms Intelligence Centre (AFIC) to equitably expand access to firearms intelligence for all law enforcement agencies within Alberta. AFIC will provide timely, accurate, and actionable intelligence to law enforcement agencies and policy-makers to achieve the shared and collaborative goals of increasing public safety concerning firearm-related crimes.

Ghost Guns are illegal, privately manufactured firearms or lower receivers. These weapons are often made with 3D-printers, and undermine public safety due to their lack of licensing requirements, serialization and safety controls.
