Library Staff Help Arrest Offender Browsing Child Porn

Edmonton… A 42-year-old man was arrested by ALERT after allegedly browsing child sexual exploitation images on a computer at an Edmonton library.

ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) team arrested Daniel Kelbert on March 10 at his home in north Edmonton. ICE is an integrated team consisting of Edmonton Police Service and RCMP members, and investigates offences involving child pornography, any computer-related child sexual abuse, child luring over the Internet, voyeurism involving victims under the age of 18, and child sex trade/tourism.

Kelbert was allegedly viewing child pornography on one of the computers at the Woodcroft branch of the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) on February 19 when he was confronted by a library staff member who observed the illegal behaviour. Library staff called the police but Kelbert fled the scene prior to police arrival. ALERT took over the investigation, and was able to identify the suspect through his digital identity with the assistance of EPL.

“EPL is committed to providing barrier-free access to computers and computer training to all Edmontonians,” said Pilar Martinez, CEO of the Edmonton Public Library. “However, we do not support or condone the use of resources for illegal activity and work closely with law enforcement to eliminate this behavior.”

Kelbert has been charged with possessing and accessing child pornography. He was also wanted on warrant for a previous parole violation. Kelbert was remanded in custody and is awaiting a court appearance for the charges.
