Fort McMurray… A man believed to have taken part in an early morning shooting in southwest Edmonton in May 2022 was arrested by members of the EPS Firearms Investigation Unit in Fort McMurray on November 28, 2023.
On May 15, 2022, EPS officers responded to a report of multiple shooters exchanging gunfire across a residential street in front of 1721 Adamson Cr., between the south Edmonton neighbourhoods of Allard and Cavanagh. Residents reported hearing gunfire around 4:35 a.m.
Bullets struck two homes, each two kilometres away. A bullet was recovered from what was an occupied bedroom in a home on Checknita Way, and a bullet hole was located in the laundry room of another residence on Checknita Common. No injuries were reported.
Security footage obtained by investigators depicted multiple people and vehicles fleeing the scene of the shooting.
During an extensive investigation, FIU officers used the Integrated Ballistics Identification System (IBIS), which allows EPS to perform ballistic analysis on seized firearms. In this investigation investigators were able to connect a handgun seized by ALERT officers in Fort McMurray in June 2022 to the May 15 shooting and identified Nagib Abdirahman as a suspect.
On Nov. 28, 2023, EPS Firearms Investigation Unit and ALERT Fort McMurray arrested Abdirahman in Fort McMurray. After executing a search warrant on his residence, officers located the following in the basement:
As a result, Abdirahman faces several weapons and drug charges, including:
Abdirahman was remanded at Edmonton Remand Centre after a bail hearing on December 5, 2023. He is scheduled to appear in court on December 12, 2023.
“This arrest and the removal of another deadly weapon from the streets is a perfect example of multiple law enforcement agencies working together toward a common goal,” said Staff Sergeant Eric Stewart, EPS Organized Crime Branch, Guns & Gangs Section. “Specialized units such as the Firearms Investigation Unit remain committed to addressing the continuing problem of gun violence in Edmonton.”
